Flexible Packaging Material Buying Guide

1.Flexible Packaging

Flexible packaging is a crucial part of small to big business nowadays.

The finest qualities of plastics and films are combined to manufacture flexible packaging. These flexible packaging materials are a practical solution with low production costs.

Flexible packaging is a pack or vessel with flexible plastic or easily yielding materials that can easily change shape when filled or closed. The structure can be made of paper, plastic, foil, film, or any combination of materials.

In this article, we'll explain why flexible packaging is so helpful. In addition, we discuss factors to consider when buying packaging solutions for your products.

2.Flexible Packaging Materials

Flexible packaging materials come in a variety of styles. We'll keep our list to the most popular items for the sake of brevity.

Remember that working with a packaging partner will assist you in selecting the best packaging. Using the best solutions will save you time and money in the long run.

Some of the main characteristics of the most widely used material in flexible packaging materials are described below.

3.POLYMER FILMS

A wide range of polymer films can be formed into various shapes and sizes. Plastics are more adaptable, durable, and cost-effective than other materials, which is why they now dominate the FP market.

The following polymer films are mainly used in the manufacture of flexible packaging.

4.BOPET (Biaxially- oriented polyethene terephthalate)

BOPET films are superior in stiffness, chemical inertness, oxygen barrier properties, tensile strength, and heat resistance. They are common surface films in layers and are used to preserve food from oxidation and odour loss in products like coffee packaging and convenience food pouches.

White POPET is commonly used for dairy products such as yoghurt, whereas clear POPET is the most widely used lidding material for frozen or fresh ready meals.

5.BOPE (Biaxially-oriented polyethylene)

BOPE films have a high strength stiffness, outstanding tensile strength and puncture resistance, a high gloss and transparency, and a good moisture barrier. These films are simple to make and inexpensive to produce. BOPE films can be applied in different areas such as shopping bags, perishable goods such as food packages, pharmaceutical drugs, liquids, spices, pesticides, industrial goods, cosmetics, laundry detergents, etc.

6.BOPA (Biaxially- oriented polyamide)

BOPA film is fully transparent and extremely tough, and puncture-resistant. It is an excellent barrier to oxygen, chemicals, and odours. It is used for perishable food packaging, food sensitive to oxygen, distilled goods packaging, agriculture products packaging, and medical product packaging.

7.BOPP (Biaxially-oriented polypropylene)

BOPP (Biaxially-oriented polypropylene) are chemically compatible and have excellent moisture vapour barrier function. They are frequently metalized for improved barrier performance and, as a result, are appropriate for hot filling. BOPP films are used in clear wraps and most snack foods, food pouches and bags, dairy and confectionery products, personal services and hygiene products, and pesticides.

8.Aluminium foil and metalized substrates

The best folding properties are found in aluminium foil. It provides a complete barrier to all gases, moisture, and light. It is a good radiant heat reflector, and it is usually supported by plastic and paper because it cracks when folded. Alone, it does not provide a satisfactory aroma or another barrier.

It is primarily used for tamper-proof lidding of yoghurts, flavoured beverages, cosmetics, food, beverages, powders, confectionery and precooked meals, canned soups, preserved, liquid foods and pharmaceuticals.

9.Bioplastic and cellulosic film

They effectively prevent oxygen, grease, and oil permeation and have poor water-resistant properties without coating or lamination. These films are simple to recycle, biodegrade, and compost. Cellulose fibres and bioplastic films are increasingly being used in the food, baked goods, confectionery, and snack-packaging industries.

10.Kraft paper

Kraft paper has great specific strength and elasticity and good tear resistance, and is crafted for packaging products that require a high level of strength and durability. It is used for single multi-walled carbon nanotubes paper bags and tackles for loss (for cement, food, chemical products, consumer goods, flour bags, and so on), sale bags for baked goods, and wrapping.

11.Materials with single and multiple layers

Some flexible packaging is made from a one layer of material, whereas in others, multi-layer materials are needed to provide the necessary barrier and protection. Each layer protects and preserves differently, such as product protection, preventative contamination measures, extended freshness, puncture, burst, and resistance to wear, seal and tensile strength.

12.Choose what is best for your product

You must decide what you want for your product. You will struggle to know if you've chosen the right solution until all of your requirements have been defined.

You'll need some parameters to point you in the right direction. You'll also need to highlight what your products need to be protected from when security.

Time of transportation, the high-altitude position of the transport, weather condition of the operational area. All of these factors influence which packaging is the best option. You have to consider all these possibilities and choose your best option.

You'll also need to determine your budget, but don't be too short-sighted. Aside from the cost, you must consider whether you will need to install new packaging machinery.

Additionally, you may need to include secondary packaging to ensure the safety of your product. Communicate with your suppliers as soon as possible, keeping your budget in mind. Any financial constraints should be discussed. This will save you time during the material selection process.

Aside from that, you'll need to set aside time for review and revisions. Don't expect quick fixes to be cheap. Allow yourself enough time to go over your flexible packaging.
